Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation

Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation

Nuclear security and nonproliferation is a multidisciplinary mission-oriented field comprising science, technology, and policy. Research in this area includes detector and algorithm development for search, localization, and imaging of special nuclear material; active and passive interrogation modalities for the interdiction of nuclear material out of regulatory control; development of new technologies and techniques for the IAEA safeguards regime; multisensor systems and data fusion for homeland security and proliferation detection; pre- and post-detonation nuclear forensic methods, including nuclear chemistry, mass spectrometry, and other state-of-the-art analytical capabilities; etc. This area of study integrates policy considerations to inform complex nuclear security threats and proliferation challenges, bridging the gap between scientific exploration and practical implementation.
