Jacob Sebastian Receives Hoffman Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship

September 30, 2026

Jacob Sebastian, a recent Ph.D. graduate from UC Berkeley’s Department of Nuclear Engineering, has been selected for the Darleane C. Hoffman Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The fellowship supports early-career scientists conducting research in nuclear nonproliferation and security while preparing them for careers across the national laboratory complex.

Sebastian completed his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering at UC Berkeley in summer 2026. As a Nuclear Science and Security Consortium Fellow, he conducted research on neutron detection technologies. His dissertation, completed under the guidance of Professor Bethany Goldblum, focused on characterizing the pulse shapes of fast plastic scintillators with picosecond-scale resolution. His work contributes to the development and understanding of advanced radiation detection technologies for nuclear science and security.

As a Hoffman Fellow at Berkeley Lab, Sebastian will continue developing the technical expertise needed to address nuclear security threats while contributing to the laboratory’s broader nuclear nonproliferation mission.
