SUMMARY:Vlad Podolsky - Avalanche Fusion
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: \nAvalanche Energy is developing the Orbitron\, a compact crossed-field fusion device for neutron\nand power generation. The concept combines a radial electric field established by a high voltage\nwith an axial\, mirror-like magnetic field produced by superconducting magnets in devices with\nradii as small as 6 cm. Rapid iteration is central to Avalanche’s approach\, and the Orbitron’s\ncompact size enables us to put this philosophy into practice. Across the various device\ngenerations\, we have explored electrostatic\, magnetic\, and intermediate ion confinement\nregimes\, investigating their limitations alongside plasma–surface interactions and energy loss\nmechanisms. This talk will provide an overview of the scientific program at Avalanche Energy\,\nhighlight successive generations of the Orbitron and its technical milestones\, and introduce plans\nfor future iterations. \n  \nBIO: \nDr. Vlad Podolsky received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of\nAerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southern California. He earned his\nPh.D. from Purdue University in 2019\, where his research focused on nanosecond pulsed\nplasmas. He subsequently worked as a research engineer at Momentus Space\, where he helped\nlead the development of microwave electrothermal thrusters and ancillary propulsion systems.\nSince joining Avalanche Energy in 2022\, he has led ion source development\, developed plasma\ndiagnostics\, and explored fusion concepts.
