SUMMARY:Alexander Krakovich - Improving safety and decreasing uncertainties
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: \nThis talk examines two approaches to making nuclear technology safer and more precise. First\, I will present new measurement techniques for research reactors\, ranging from tracking fuel burnup and identifying power hot spots to measuring safety-rod drop times. These techniques can help detect problems before they develop into safety risks. \nI will also discuss dynamic SPECT\, a recently developed cardiac imaging technique. Although its results agree well with gold-standard scans on average\, puzzling discrepancies can arise for individual patients. My phantom studies confirmed that the scanning method itself is accurate\, and I developed a new clinical technique that can identify which individual measurements are reliable. \nBIO: \nAlexander Krakovich is a visiting researcher in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley\, hosted by Professor Daniel Siefman. He is currently on sabbatical from the Soreq Nuclear Research Center\, where he serves as a senior researcher specializing in neutronics and reactor technologies. He is also a lecturer in the Graduate School of Engineering at Tel Aviv University. \nKrakovich holds an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology\, an M.Sc. in Nuclear Energy with a specialization in reactor physics and engineering from France’s Institut National des Sciences et Techniques Nucléaires\, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Tel Aviv University.
