Abstract:

This lecture is the final lecture of Hiroyuki Takahashi as a professor of the University of Tokyo. He first introduces his background and motivation of the research in radiation measurements. Then, he shows his research topics according to his experience, which focuses on gaseous radiation detectors, digital signal processing, microelectronics, gamma-ray imaging, and superconducting detectors. In gaseous detectors, the lecture focuses on microstrip gas counters and glass gas electron multipliers. Digital signal processing with fast ADC digitizing technique will be followed, which demonstrates the usefulness of the waveform signal processing. Microelectronics works will be explained with the gamma- ray imaging applications. Superconducting transition edge sensor development is still ongoing works. He focuses on iridium-based devices and recent results will be introduced for this type of detectors. Also, he will emphasize the view point of the total system for radiation applications, where the source, the optics and the detector contribute to the total performance of the system. He shows a new scheme of multi-step reactions of radioactive isotopes, which could potentially overcome the difficulty of the use of the short half life nuclides. Finally, he will mention the importance of the international collaboration in this field, and remember Professor Joonhong Ahn and his great contribution between UC Berkeley/Berkeley Lab and the University of Tokyo.

Bio:

Hiroyuki Takahashi is a Professor at the University of Tokyo’s School of Engineering and Special Advisor to the President. His research focuses on radiation detection and measurement technologies, advanced imaging systems, and sensor and signal-processing innovations, and he directs multiple interdisciplinary research centers at the university.
