A Youth Led Nuclear Victory at COP-27
March 3, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Ia Aanstoot,
Stockholm
In what is undoubtedly a first for Berkeley Nuclear Engineering, this week’s colloquium will be given by a high school student in Stockholm, who played a critical role in delaying the COP27 climate negotiations by three hours and fundamentally changed the outcome by making it include nuclear power. The climate crisis is the biggest challenge humanity has stood before. COP27 and the COPs before and after it are an international attempt to combat climate change, but since the very beginning they, and the environmental movement that started it all, have been anti-nuclear. This is the story of the shift to pro-nuclear, and how three words can change the meaning of an international agreement. This colloquium will cover the basics of international climate politics, the structure and conflicts of COP, the outcomes of COP27, the basic methods and goals of nuclear advocacy, and the story of how an eighteen-year-old ended up holding a colloquium.
