Berkeley team selected to lead a project in ARPA-E’s ROCKS Program

We are proud to announce that the team led by Prof. Igor Jovanovic, including collaborators from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of Texas at Austin, and Baker Hughes Company, has been selected to participate in the Reliable Ore Characterization with Keystone Sensing (ROCKS) program, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

This highly competitive selection recognizes projects with the potential to advance innovative energy technologies and address critical challenges in resource characterization. The project CADILLAC (Cased-hole Associated-particle Dual Imager for Lithology and Logging Anomaly Correction) will develop an advanced borehole imaging tool to accelerate and improve mineral prospecting. This technology uses DT fusion-generated neutrons to generate detailed 3D images of rock formations at greater depths than current devices can, revealing composition and geological structures such as rock layers. Imaging will enable more precise geological modeling with fewer drill holes, thereby reducing exploration time and costs.
